Trains run again after strike

A strike by civil servants working at train stations ended on Thursday, and train service has resumed across the country.

The workers stopped train service for 24 hours to protest the temporary dismissal of 16 workers for participating in a previous strike. Trains across Turkey did not run on Wednesday, and 30 workers were laid off due to the 24-hour strike.

After the strike, launched by the members of the Union of Public Employees in Transport Services Branch of Turkey (Türk Ulaşım-Sen) and United Transportation Employees’ Union (BTS), the trains began to run as scheduled.

Meanwhile, Turkish State Railways (TCDD) General Manager Süleyman Karaman said they had to put passengers on buses, which cost as much as TL 100,000 for the TCDD, noting that most train conductors participated in the strike and that is why trains stopped across the country.

While stating that the bus costs will be recouped from those who participated in the strike, Karaman said they launched an investigation into the strikers who prevented others from working and trains from running, adding that they did not launch an investigation into those who solely participated in the strike by not working on Wednesday.
